All Wilderness Medics Inc. contractors are required to attend an 8-hour refresher and continuing education course each year, as well as well as being required to meet the arduous level pack test standard, before they can be placed on our contractor pool list.
This refresher/continuing education course meets the requirements set by the NWCG for a firefighter type II, which is a minimum standard for all Wilderness Medics Inc. contractors working on wild land fires.
Our continuing education course brings in doctors and other instructors in our field to lecture on relevant topics and to answer frequently asked questions. We also annually lecture on over the counter medications (OTC) commonly seen at large wild land incident camps. An additional benefit to our contractors is that you will receive continuing education (CE) hours for attending.

According to an article from the Enviro-Tech International website, it is important to have trained professionals ready for emergencies to arise in remote areas. When medical problems come up miles and miles away from advanced medical care facilities in the wilderness, every decision you make is important to the survival of the victum. Extended medical care teams train for medical treatment in remote areas, where they must face life-saving decisions. There are three important areas that these teams must prepare for when out in the field:
1. These medical teams must prepare to take care of the patient out on field, instead of in normal emergency rooms at local hospitals. They must learn how to prepare for any circumstance that mother nature might present them in the wilderness.
2. Working in remote setting, equipment can be limited for the use of treating the patient. These special teams must train in using limited resources depending on the emergency situation.
3. Working in remote locations can mean difficult environments rescuers have to go through. Whether it be extreme cold or heat situations, these medical teams must train to rescue patients in any environment.

A wild land fire is a fire that is unplanned and occurs in largely undeveloped forest, shrub or grassland. In recent years, the occurrence of wild land fires has increased worldwide and while many of these fires are caused by lightning, four out of five wild land fires are caused by people.
There are three different types of wild land fires, each with varying intensity. The first of these is a surface fire which is the most common type of wild land fire and burns along the forest floor. The second type of wild land fire is a ground fire. These are normally caused by lightning and burn on the forest floor in the humus layer (the dead organic matter on the floor such as leaves) down to the forest’s soil. The final type of wild land fire is a crown or canopy fire. These are high intensity fires that jump along the top of trees and are spread by wind.
Wild Land fires also have emergency medical teams there to help with all medical emergencies no matter how big or small. These teams are composed of highly trained individuals who are there for first response to any one injured or needing medical assistance.
